YWCA Darien/Norwalk Honors Women for their Significant
Contributions to our Community
YWCA Darien/Norwalk Women of Distinction 2011 Honoree Profiles
DARIEN, CT
- May 3, 2011 - The
YWCA Darien/Norwalk will honor six local women who have made
significant contributions to our community at the YWCA Women
of Distinction Awards and Luncheon on June 9 at Woodway
Country Club in Darien.
The Women of Distinction Award is bestowed in recognition of
the outstanding achievements of a select group of women who
demonstrate the spirit of the YWCA's brand vision to empower
women. This year's honorees are: Susan Daly, Lisa Joyce, Kiki
Karpen, Grace Lichtenstein, and Jeanne Marconi, MD. Katie
Grozier will be honored as a Young Woman of Distinction,
recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of a woman under
21 years of age.
YWCA Darien/Norwalk Woman of Distinction Kiki Karpen's
distinguished service career began as Darien President of the
League of Women Voters in the late 1980's and later served in
other local and state roles including President of the League
of Women Voters of Connecticut. Other areas where Kiki has
provided leadership include the Board of Finance of Darien,
the Darien Library Board, the CT Public Affairs Network,
Darien Chamber of Commerce, the Advisory Committee of the
Center for Nonprofit Excellence and the UConn Program on
Nonprofit Leadership. As the current Executive Director of
the Community Fund of Darien, Kiki has expanded the mission of
the organization beyond raising money and providing annual
grants to health and human services agencies. She has been a
driving force in community collaboration by leading several
initiatives that address the gaps in human services in Darien including
"Aging in Place" and "Thriving Youth Connected Community."
Bob Wells, President of the Community Fund, praises Kiki,
"Kiki is a strong package of intelligence, honesty,
dedication, energy, community spirit, professionalism,
enthusiasm, compassion and grace - all wrapped in a tireless
work ethic."
Darien and Norwalk pediatrician Jeanne Marconi, MD has spent
the last twenty years as a dedicated doctor at the Center for
Advanced Pediatrics and has increased the program from simple
check-ups and sick appointments to include a Pediatric
Endocrine and Diabetes Program, a travel medicine center, and
nutritional programs. She also spearheaded the Center's Urgi-Kids
program which allows any child in need of medical attention to
access the same equipment and procedures of an Emergency
Room. Dr. Marconi was recognized as doctor of the year by
the American Academy of Pediatrics and was just voted Top Doc
CT 2011 for the third year in a row, an indication of her
kindness to her patients and reputation among her peers in the
medical field. She has been the President and Vice President
of the Connecticut Chapter of the American Academy of
Pediatrics, an Associate Professor at Quinnipiac Medical School and
NY Medical College at Westchester Medical Center, and has
served on numerous Advisory Boards and Executive Committees in
both the medical and community service areas.
Darien High School
Senior Katie Grozier has been dedicated to community service
ever since she volunteered at New Covenant House in middle
school. She was the only freshman to be involved in the
organization buildOn, an organization that assists
underdeveloped countries further its education systems, and
has served as the buildOn Vice President for the past two
years. She also was selected for leadership programs with
buildOn during the past two summers. Katie has also been
involved with the organization ChinaCare and traveled to China during
her sophomore year to see firsthand the challenges in China's
orphanages. She has also volunteered at the New Canaan
and Stamford Nature Centers, Scofield Manor, Chester Addison,
the AIDS walk, Pacific House, Darien Book Aid,
and Stepping Stones Museum. She is the print editor of Neirad,
a vice president of the National Honor Society and runs on
the Darien track team. Lara Levine, Program and Trek
Coordinator of buildOn, speaks highly of Katie, "Katie Grozier
is such a kind girl with a huge heart...In CT and at Darien
High, Katie has led the community service component of buildOn's after school program for the past two years working
to get students out in their communities and volunteer. She
is a role model to those around her!"
