Urgi-Kids vs. the ER: Where to Go for Your Child’s Urgent Medical Needs
At our walk-in pediatric Urgi-Kids urgent care clinic in Norwalk, Connecticut, we provide prompt medical care for babies, kids, and teens with pressing, non-emergency injuries, symptoms, and health concerns. Learn more here.

At The Center for Advanced Pediatrics in Norwalk and Darien, Connecticut, we’ve been providing high-quality care for babies, children, and adolescents in Connecticut’s Gold Coast region for over six decades (and counting).

Our pediatric team knows that your child’s health needs can’t always wait for a standard scheduled doctor’s visit: When they’re ill or injured, they need walk-in care ASAP.

Here’s when your child’s pressing medical concern should prompt you to head to our Urgi-Kids urgent care clinic — and when it’s best to head to your nearest ER.

When your child needs prompt medical attention

Urgent medical conditions typically require swift expert care, and often persist or worsen without timely treatment. Emergency medical problems are either life-threatening, limb-threatening, or have the potential to worsen without immediate specialist care.

Comprehensive walk-in pediatric care services

When your child is experiencing a pressing medical problem that isn’t a life-threatening emergency — but does call for prompt professional evaluation and treatment — it’s time to head to our walk-in Urgi-Kids clinic.

With a seasoned team of providers and on-site X-ray services, Urgi-Kids is fully equipped to handle pressing pediatric urgent care needs seven days a week. This includes:

Concerning symptoms

Our team diagnoses and treats kids with infections and illnesses every day of the week. If you can’t schedule a same-day sick visit with your pediatrician, we can evaluate these symptoms at our walk-in clinic:

  • Persistent earache or headache
  • Sore throat, cough, congestion
  • Persistent fever, body aches, chills
  • Red, itchy eyes with discharge
  • Vomiting, diarrhea, constipation
  • Mild to moderate abdominal pain

It’s especially important to stop by our Urgi-Kids clinic if you suspect your child has an illness or infection that’s dehydrating (e.g., persistent diarrhea, food poisoning) or requires antibiotic treatment, such as strep throat, pink eye, or an ear infection.

Acute urgent injuries

If your child sustains an urgent, non-life-threatening injury at home, at school, or on the sports field, our walk-in clinic can meet their needs. We can diagnose and treat:

  • Suspected bone fractures
  • Mild to moderate joint sprains
  • Muscle strain (pulled muscle)
  • Cuts that may need stitches
  • Minor burns and animal bites

Whether your child has mild to moderate pain or swelling following an injury, or blistering from a sunburn, our team provides prompt evaluation and expert treatment guidance.

Worrisome reactions

At our walk-in clinic, we also help kids experiencing mild-to-moderate asthma flare-ups and allergic reactions. We can assess and treat:

  • Mild asthma exacerbations
  • Moderate allergic reactions
  • Seasonal allergy symptoms
  • Insect bite or sting reaction
  • Contact skin rash or hives

Even if your child has never been diagnosed with allergies, we still recommend bringing them to Urgi-Kids if you suspect an allergic reaction (e.g., itchy throat, sudden rash, itchy eyes, nausea, digestive discomfort).

Head to the ER for serious medical emergencies

Staffed 24/7 by emergency doctors with direct access to advanced equipment and a full range of specialists, the ER is the best place to seek care for sudden, severe symptoms, any other life-threatening condition, or a limb-threatening injury.

As a general rule, the ER is best when your child has severe pain or a sudden onset of severe symptoms, a high fever that won’t break (or any fever in infants younger than two months), or something “doesn’t work,” (e.g., your child can’t stand or move their arm).

Call 911 or bring your child straight to the ER if they have:

  • A head injury (concussion)
  • A sudden, severe headache
  • A severe allergic reaction
  • A severe asthma attack
  • A seizure episode; fainting
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • A sudden rash with fever
  • Intense neck pain and stiffness

Always seek emergency care for severe injuries — like a complex bone fracture that breaks through the skin, a dislocated joint, or a large, deep laceration (cut) — as well as whenever you suspect (or know) your child has ingested a poisonous or toxic substance.
