Breastfeeding Q & A

What are the benefits of breastfeeding?

Both you and your baby derive significant benefits from breastfeeding.

For babies, breast milk provides ideal nutrition. The milk also offers antibodies that can protect against some short-term and long-term illnesses and diseases, including asthma, Type 1 diabetes, and obesity.

For moms, breastfeeding offers convenience. Mothers can feed their babies whenever and wherever they are without preparing or carrying around bottles of formula. Healthwise, breastfeeding reduces a mother’s risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, high blood pressure, and Type 2 diabetes.

Ideally, moms should breastfeed exclusively for the first six months and continue feeding their babies breast milk along with other foods for at least 12 months. However, some women face challenges that make breastfeeding difficult.

What are common breastfeeding challenges?

Common breastfeeding challenges women and their babies face include difficulties latching on to the nipple, slow weight gain, supply problems, and trouble pumping milk. Breastfeeding will be more difficult if your child is a fussy eater or has underlying health problems.

Mothers can also face challenges like:

  • Sore nipples
  • Engorgement
  • Breast or nipple infection
  • Flat or inverted nipples

Breastfeeding assistance is also available to women who need to return to work soon after giving birth to or adopting infants.
